Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, stars in The Response, a 30-minute film that has made the list of semi-finalists for the 82nd Academy Awards in the Short Live Action Film category, according to Trektoday.
Mulgrew plays Colonel Simms, a conservative Guantanamo military judge who believes that the president should have the right to detain people considered a national security threat. Based on the transcripts of actual hearings, The Response recreates the proceedings at the U.S. base in Cuba, where detainees suspected of ties to either al-Qaida or the Taliban have been imprisoned. The suspects appear before tribunals whichdetermine if they are being properly classified as enemy combatants.
The Response was directed by Adam Rodgers and produced by Sig Libowitz for Look at the Moon Productions.
Ten live action short films were chosen from among the seventy-one pictures that qualified, including: The Response, The Door, The Ground Beneath, Hotel, Instead of Abracadabra, Kavi, Miracle Fish, The New Tenants, Short Term 12 and Sidney Turtlebaum.
The 2010 Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 7, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in California.
