Fan Film Friday: Holiday Special

Written by Randy Hall on December 25, 2009 – 5:00 am -

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the people who make fan films often include the holiday season in their independent productions. Let’s look at some great examples of science-fiction fans being creative with their Christmas celebrations.

First up is a brief two-part Doctor Who adventure in which the Doctor accidentally puts the Earth in jeopardy and even puts a companion at risk of missing Christmas! You can see the first section of “Christmas Collision” by timelordfromhell below:

And here’s the conclusion:

Most of the productions I review for Fan Film Friday are intended to be serious extensions of the makers’ favorite sci-fi TV shows or movies, but some folks like to poke fun at those series instead.

A terrific example of that is Star Track, a long-running fan series produced by Golden Media Studios that puts Star Trek in a humorous light via live-action episodes as well as animated adventure.

For its sixth annual Christmas special, the group has taken a comical look at the Trek universe after the tenth motion picture, Nemesis, as the crew of the Starship Idomo looks up an old friend but runs into the Borg on Christmas Eve in “Misconceptions:”

While many of these fan films have a holiday theme, they don’t have to have the word “Christmas” in the title to be considered a “gift” to folks who enjoy independent productions.

For example, one of the most popular trailers currently available online is the preview for next summer’s Iron Man II movie, which you can watch here. However, it took a unique fan perspective to give us billionaire Tony Starch and his double identity Ironing Man:

Turning back to Star Trek, one of the most eagerly anticipated fan productions is the conclusion to the second episode by Starship Exeter, which is entitled “The Tressaurian Intersection.”

Until that finale arrives, fans of the Exeter can get a humorous taste of life on that Federation starship by checking out this nicely done comedy clip:

By the way, one of the best online resources I use in preparing my Fan Film Friday columns is a terrific Website called Star Trek Reviewed. Check it out if you want an extensive listing of Trek fan films from the Enterprise era to more than a century after Nemesis.

During a recent visit to the site, I came across a grand version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” done with the characters of Classic Trek.

Even though an animator called Spock Prime used text captions instead of voiceovers for his episode, it’s a wonderful look at what would happen if Spock was visited by Santa Claus while alone on the Enterprise bridge. You can watch it here:

Finally, one of the very best independent productions available at BatmanFanFilms.com is another view of that holiday poem, this time with Saint Nick appearing in the Batcave. It’s called “Twas the Dark Knight Before Christmas,” and your holiday season won’t be complete until you view it here:

Well, that wraps up Fan Film Friday for 2009. After we’ve all finished celebrating Christmas and other holidays, as well as ringing in the New Year, I’ll be back to review more independent productions of Star Trek and other science-fiction favorites. Until then, Happy Holidays, and I’ll see you in 2010!

Fantastic reviews. It was nice to see some none trek reviews in the mix. I’d like to see more reviews of fan movies based in other popular universes. Great work and Merry Christmas.
