Who Finale Sparks ‘Master’ Plan

Since the first part of the Doctor Who season finale, “The End of Time,” aired in the U.K. and the U.S. over Christmas weekend, a number of online sites have come as close as possible to making the episode’s cliffhanger ending a reality.

Hours after the show ended, a group called “Everyone on Facebook must change their profile pictures to John Simm” (the actor who plays the villainous Master in the two-parter) appeared on one of the world’s largest social networking websites. Facebook.com has millions of active users worldwide.

The group exploded from 50 members to more than 2,200 between December 26 and 28 in the Just for Fun category and the Inside Jokes topic, with the goal of gaining as many people as possible before the conclusion to “The End of Time” is broadcast over New Year’s weekend.

Until then, fans are trying to duplicate the plan by the Master to remake everyone on Earth in his image as part of his latest clash with the Doctor, a Time Lord portrayed by David Tennant, who is the tenth actor to star in the long-running science-fiction series.

To help others take on the likeness of the Master, Facebook members have posted more than 90 photographs of not just Simm’s Master, but other actors who played the role in earlier seasons of the program, including Roger Delgado, Anthony Ainley and Derek Jacobi.

Another site where Who fans are taking on Simm’s likeness is TrekBBS.com, a message board generally devoted to the various incarnations of Star Trek. Several people who post in the site’s Science Fiction & Fantasy section have created their own avatars from the first part of “End.”

Some posters in the section have represented themselves with pictures of the Doctor, as played by Tennant, whose run will end with the episode’s conclusion, and Matt Smith, who will take over as the new version of the Time Lord when the series returns in a few months.

However, fans aren’t the only ones who want to see people bearing the villain’s face. On a site from the BBC (which produces Doctor Who), the network is providing an online mask of the Master that can be downloaded, printed, cut out and worn by both young and old viewers of the series.

The conclusion to “The End of Time” will air in the U.K. over BBC One and BBC HD on Friday, New Year’s Day, at 6:40 p.m. In the United States, the program will be broadcast on BBC America on Saturday, January 2, at 8:30 p.m.
