Star Trek XII To Beam Into Theaters June 29, 2012

Recent reports have said that the sequel to JJ Abrams’ successful Star Trek film would be seen by fans in late 2010 or early 2011. However, according to Trekmovie.com and apparently verified by boxofficemojo.com and a Tweet from Firstshowing.com’s Alex Billington, Trek will not return until June 29, 2012, in time to hopefully have a big July 4 holiday weekend.

Of course, Paramount has let it be known that they want another movie as soon as possible. Paramount even tried to jumpstart the film by signing on the writers (Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof) to a contract in March, 2009, before the film was in general release. But the summer of 2011 has already become a crowded one for feature films as well as the schedules for the Star Trek team (especially Abrams).

Abrams has previously indicated that it should reach theaters during in the summer of 2012.  Apparently, Abrams has gotten his wish since sources are now indicating that “the team behind the film decided to shoot for mid-summer,” Trekmovie.com said.

The new date also makes it much more likely that Abrams will direct the film since the in-demand director has indicated he wanted to complete another film project during 2010.

Regarding competition, “The Untitled Star Trek Sequel” has nothing scheduled against it currently, but that will certainly change as the date moves closer. Of course, like all information this far in advance, consider it as you would any rumor.
