Doctor Who News Round Up
Written by Ian Cullen on February 8, 2010 – 10:41 am -With just a couple of months until the Spring Premiere of Matt Smith’s eleventh Doctor. There’s going to be a fair bit of news on the series as the start date looms closer.
In order to keep you all as up to date as possible. Here’s a quick round up of some of the recent stories, which have been hitting the UK Media.
As far as series one casting goes for Matt Smith’s incarnation of the series Sophie Okonedo is one of the high profile guest stars who will appear in the new show. The 41 – year old actor is perhaps best known to UK Veiwers for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela in the BBC drama of the same name.
A source told The Sun newspaper that getting Sophie Okonedo onboard was a huge coup for the new Doctor Who production team due to it getting much criticism for not having enough big name guest stars.
In response to the criticism. Steven Moffat was quick to point out that the series should be about The Doctor and his adventures, and not the guest talent. He goes on to cite Kylie Minogue’s guest turn as an example of the guest being potentially bigger than the show.
Okonedo, 41 will reportedly take on the role of Liz Ten.
“Besides, some fans thought the Kylie Minogue Christmas episode was a bit naff. It just goes to show that getting a big name on the show does not guarantee quality.” Moffat said when asked about the lack of big name guest stars.
In other Doctor Who news Moffat has gone on record for saying that his initial thoughts on Matt Smith for the role of the 11th Doctor, were that the actor is too young. A perception, which soon changed when the actor auditioned.
Moffat’s initial concern was that Smith who is 27, and the youngest actor to play the role. Didn’t fit his own imaginary vision of what the 11th Doctor should be.
He said: “I thought it’s mid-30s to mid-40s. I still maintain that’s where most of your Doctors will be, in that age group.
“They should be young enough to run, but old enough to look like they can be King of the Universe.”
Finally Torchwood lead John Barrowman made an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show over weekend, and told the chat show host that he was looking forward to his stint in the hit American series Desperate House Wives’.
When quizzed about Torchwood the actor said, “I love playing Captain Jack… I have no clue what’s going to happen… I would go back in a second.”
