Laura Vandervoort On Growing Into Supergirl
Written by Ian Cullen on June 6, 2008 – 12:52 pm -One challenge, which faces many actors in genre television, is being presented with an iconic role. It can often be both a blessing and a curse and the job in hand is to make it your own somehow.
That challenge fell on the shoulders of newcomer Laura Vandervoort when she was cast as Kara AKA Supergirl and cousin to Clark Kent in the seventh season of Smallville – and in a recent interview for the new issue of Starburst the actress talked about how she went about making the role her own.
“The challenges I faced when playing Kara for the first time was trying to sort through all the background information they had given me,” she says. “There was her life on Krypton as well as her relationship with her father, and her motivations on Earth. I didn’t know much about Supergirl and was truly starting from scratch. It was easy to find information on her all over the place, but the toughest part was making her mine.”
“Once I was able to see how Kara and I were alike – she was new to Earth, while I was new to Vancouver and this set – it clicked. I then used those feelings of my whirlwind, life changing experience, including living on my own in British Columbia and meeting a cast of six years and trying to fit in.”
“From there, I threw myself into Kara’s size seven and a half red boots, and since those first few episodes the character has grown, as I have. I am now confidant with who I am on set, and Kara is comfortable as well as confident with who she is on Earth. I’ve found interesting characteristics she embodies, and have begun to really have fun with her. In many ways, she’s grown into a fully emotional female. Kara now feels, Loves and understands. Nowadays, she doesn’t just throw and break things when she’s mad, but rather she sympathizes, thinks things through, and then throws and breaks things,” jokes the actress.
There is much more of this interview with laura Vandervoort in the new issue of Starburst Magazine which is out now.
