After months of speculation and much media interest, the identity of the eleventh actor to take on the iconic role of Doctor Who has finally been revealed.

In a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential, which celebrated each incarnation of The Doctor, the eleventh actor who will take over from David Tennant was revealed to be 26-year old Matt Smith.

Smith is a relative newcomer but has been seen in some pretty major television dramas, including Ruby In the Smoke in which he co-starred alongside former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper.

This casting is entirely from left field, because Smith wasn’t even a contender for the role in the eyes of the mainstream and Internet media. Not even we here at SciFi Pulse got it right this time and our source more often than not is correct with its information. That said, we never stated speculation on who would get the role as fact and our reports yesterday were about the media guesswork as to who might take on the role.

Smith is the youngest ever actor to be cast in the role, a title previously held by Peter Davison.

When talking about the casting process producer Steven Moffat revealed that Smith instantly came across as the next Doctor from the very first, and he was among the first people to audition for the role.

Smith commented on how difficult it has been for him to keep it a secret for so long. “This next six months for me is about preparation and learning about the history of the show and soaking it all up,” Smith said during his interview for Doctor Who Confidential.

Smith will start work on Doctor Who in September, when production on the 2010 series begins. Writing for the 2010 season is already underway.

Congratulations should go out to Steven Moffat for keeping the media spotlight off of Matt Smith. Rich Johnston called it for Matt Smith earlier today via twitter, and it was overlooked by many websites and media outlets, including SciFi Pulse. Even the BBC news programme that ran shortly before Confidential was still reporting that David Morrissey was the favorite.

Thanks, Ian. The previous youngest Doctor was actually Davison who was 29 going on 30 at time he was cast.

Thanks for the correction. I kind of got those two mixed up. I don’t think Tennant was that much older when he took on the role. And I was never really a fan of Peter Davison.

I know. Bruce should never have hidden the sonic screwdriver in his chin. He’s make a wonderful wizard or time lord, or mysterious gandalf type character. He could kill the daleks with catchphrases lol.
