Ian’s Roving Editorial: Tripping The Pulse

Ok… this weeks editorial is more a case of my musings. So a few subjects will be covered.

First off the bat the other night I listened to the SyFy Portal Podcast – which is a show done by Mike Hinman. It’s basically a talk radio show and they have guests on now and then. Well most weeks to be honest – but when it isn’t celebrity’s, composers or production people he has webmasters on.

The show isn’t as good as my favourite Slice Of Sci Fi - but with a few more presenters as back up it could be. However Star Trek fans will be interested to know that actor George Takei (Sulu from Star Trek) will be joining Mike on his show later this month.

This week was the turn of Trekmovie.coms Anthony Pascale who seemed like a pleasant guy – and actually sounded really excited about the new movie. I have to say I’m pretty upbeat about the movie myself. It was an interesting interview and much of what Anthony shared I found myself agreeing with.

While on the subject of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was watching ‘Best of Both Worlds’ the other day on DVD and it’s starting to date FX wise – but it’s still good entertainment. I particularly always found it funny how when under attack – the crew of Enterprise D would go off and hide in some nebula while the enemie was taking potshots at them and have a little meeting. It would go somethng like this.

Picard: Suggestions Everyone?

Geordie: I say we circumnavigate this nebula – use the ram scoop and suck up all the volatile gasses and ram it up their butt – Captain.

The Token Gay Deaf Dumb and Blind Character: What was that?

Worf: Lets kill them all now. They are without Honour.

Troi: I feel a great deal of hostility Captain.

Of course by this point the enemie ship would be using Nebula Proof smart bombs. In my version they would anyhow. I mean is It me or did they just use that ready room way to often?

Why is it we never saw a scene in the toilets of the USS Enterprise either. If JJ Abrams is reading this – which I sincerely doubt. I so wish someone would address the toilet issue. Are we so evolved in the 24th century that we don’t need to take a pee. I mean come on…

Joking aside despite the very obvious flaws Star Trek: The Next Generation still holds up pretty well – Ready room could use a lick of paint though.

Moving on I really enjoyed last weekends Doctor Who episode ‘The Stolen Earth’. I mean the crossover between Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures was really well executed – and I really enjoyed how Rose got all pouty being left out in the cold by Harriett Jones super phone thingy. Brilliant – I so love seeing Billie Piper pout.

If you are an American reader who hasn’t seen the episode and don’t want to be spoilt – read no further.

What follows are my theories based on rumours about what will happen in the last episode ‘Journeys End’. Please note this is just my theory and not a spoiler or anything that will actually happen in the episode.

We left off where the Doctor had just been shot by a Dalek after his short-lived reunion with Rose (which could have been taken right out of one of those Right Guard deodorant adverts we had in the 80′s).

So Jack after having blasted the Dalek – along with Donna and Rose drag the wounded Doctor to the TARDIS where he begins to regenerate.

Anyway here is my theory. According to many rumours that have been circulating the Doctor is going to split in two because of a dodgy regeneration due to the hand he lost and had to regenerate part way through his cycle during the first Christmas special. So if that rumour is correct – I’m not saying it is. I think that we will see two Doctors, one of which has a whole new set of 12 fresh regenerations. Obviously one Doctor would have too die by the end of the episode for this to work properly.

Also we’ve all noticed the plot around Donna Noble has been building to something. Many thought that we heard two heartbeats in the first episode, which was shown last week – which kind of fits the rumour that claims she is a Timelord and doesn’t know it. A good friend of mine suggested that her sir name of noble is a give away. Given that The Time Lords were sort of a noble race. The two heart beats could also be because she may have picked up the Masters ring at the end of the last series and is kind of slowly being possessed – just a thought.

Either way the question remains. Is Donna going to die? Or will the Doctor realise what she is and sort it out – and erase her memories of him – sort of like Clark Kent did to Lois Lane in the second Superman movie.

Damn this is so complicated… I so need to dye my hair back to it’s original brown colour.

You will note that halfway through ‘The Stolen Earth’ episode the deranged Dalek laughs and says something along the lines of the Doctors most faithful companion will die. Would that be Donna who sought the Doctor out at the start of the 4th season? Or could it be Rose who crossed dimensions in order to save the Doctor through Donna Noble and warned him of the pending Dalek invasion in the episode ‘Turn Left’.

If you think about it the one death, which would really shake the fan base to the core and have the most dramatic impact on The Doctor would be the loss of Rose.

That’s it for now. I shall leave you with the above thoughts to ponder – and of course we’ll all find out who dies – who lives and who survives to fight another day in tomorrows season four finale.
