Primeval Not Doctor Who
Written by John Freeman on July 11, 2008 – 8:41 am -Primeval star Douglas Henshall and others on the show are desperate to avoid comparisons with Doctor Who.
“It’s the one question I’ve been getting asked about the most,” he says in an interview for Sci Fi Wire. “People comparing the show to that Doctor.”
Henshall, who plays zoologist Nick Cutter in the ITV show, now screening on BBC America, says he has spent a lot of time trying to avoid the comparison of the shows, preferring to cite adventure shows such as The A-Team as being closer to the essence of Primeval. “Our show is more of an ensemble like that show was,” Henshall feels.
Series co-creator Adrian Hodges, also working on the BBC’s new version of Survivors, feels Primeval is more reality-based. (For the benefit of non-UK readers, we want to reassure you that dinosaurs do not pop up in central London all the time). However he does admit he was tempted to sneak in a few Doctor Who references or inside jokes but stopped himself.
“The worlds are very different. … At one point, we considered a sly Doctor reference when someone got angry at another character and threw a box set of Doctor Who at them, but we thought not.”
• The third season of Primeval will be screened on ITV in early 2009.
