In a recent interview for the Hollywoodoutbreak blog Star Trek producer and director J.J. Abrams revealed that he’d seen a rough cut of the movie – and that everything about it seemed to gel.
“Right now we have a cut of the movie which has about 12% of the visual FX near done – but the movies working and that’s what seems exciting to me. What’s amazing about the movie is the people are awesome. The characters are alive and they’re great and you love them. Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote an amazing script and our amazing actors make it more amazing. It is really like… you know the fun of watching Zachary Quinto take on a role like Spock which is an incredibly deceptively complicated part. When you see the whole performance – there were things he was doing that I didn’t even see or realise he was doing when we were making the movie – and to have Chris Pine come in and embrace this role of Kirk in a way that is so complete and emotional and funny and cocky and yet vulnerable. It’s a wonderful thing.”
To conclude Abrams feels that seeing the movie work without the completed FX is great news and really bodes well for the movies theatrical release in May of next year.
In an interview for SciFi Wire earlier this week the director revealed that though his movie will have its humorous moments – it would be no where near as kitschy as the original series – if anything he is going for a more realistic take.
“I feel like there’s a certain thing that you can’t really hold onto, which is, … there’s a kind of kitschy quality that must go if it’s going to be something that you believe is real…Our Star Trek is not parody, and so the idea of maintaining character relationships, the dynamic between the characters, [was key]. I never saw how Kirk and Spock became so connected. And that’s what this movie does. And it does it with the entire family of the Enterprise.”
Abrams also revealed his profound disappointment at not being able to show some promotional material at San Diego Comic Con later this month. The reasons for this are due to the fact that they do not have a good enough selection of finished FX shots to show off at the event.
