Before I start to salivate and wax enthusiastically about some of the Summer Movies that am very much looking foreword too seeing this Blockbuster Season. Let me just take a moment to welcome you all to the NEW LOOK website and let you know that this here editorial will be the first of many. It’s my plan to start a series of editorials that will give everyone who reads the chance to get to know me a little.

This new column from SciFi Pulse will be called ‘Ian’s Roving Editorial’ and will be posted every Friday as a lead in to the weekend. Please feel free to leave your feedback in the comment section below.

Movies for a long time been a favourite past time of mine.

Every year I look foreword to the latest movie releases with a child like sense of wonder and awe. Wondering what those creative minds of moviemakers are going to present us with next. Though admittedly I call a turkey a turkey when I see one, and the ‘Hulk’ movie which came out a few years back is probably the worst movie have ever seen. Ang Lee should be ashamed putting the hulk in a Stetson and giving him a back injury. I mean in a civilised society that Hulk movie would never have been made. Admittedly the new version looks a little more promising. They may actually have got it right this time.

2008 seems to have a whole host of movies waiting to impress and what’s more. Is it me or are there fewer sequels this year?

I mean other than the new Indiana Jones movie ‘Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull’ and the second movie of the rebooted Batman series ‘Dark Knight’ there seem to be less sequels this year. Which I see as a good thing.

While on the Subject of Indiana Jones I’d just like to address these nay sayers that are continually bleating on about Harrison Ford being to old to play the role.

First and foremost you are all wrong. It’s a movie. The fact is Indiana Jones is a fictional creation, therefor he could be doing it all at 70. It’s just a movie. In movies you make the rules up as you go. It’s not about realism it’s about Entertainment. Additionally have seen 60 year olds on this planet that have more energy and a much better attitude toward life than many 20 and 30 something’s. As in real people not fictional characters.

Am looking foreword to the new Indiana Jones movie, granted it will probably be the last one they make with Harrison Ford, and I personally hope it’s a good one for all concerned because we have been waiting for years for this one.

Sure Harrison Ford is in his 60′s now. But I bet you all any money that he is a lot fitter and has more get up and go in him than most your average 60 year olds.

That aside though I actually know a real life archaeologist who is in his mid 50′s and still going out there on digs. So if he can do that. Why can’t Indiana Jones still put himself in harms way be it for what will probably be the last time. The thing is Indy is a 50 something in this feature and 50 is not really that old in the scheme of things. Sean Connery when he did ‘The Rock’ was about 66 when he played that role and played a somewhat physical role in that movie. So is Connery can do it and connery is 13 years older than Harrison Ford. Then why not have Harrison do Indy one last time.

If you’re one of the ageist folks that says, ‘Harrison Ford is to old.’ Then don’t see the movie. Go see a younger actor in a different movie instead if you have a problem with more mature actors. Because to be honest the fact that you think the actor is too old for the role only serves to show that you probably do not have much of an understanding of the word ‘Escapism’, it’s not supposed to be real.

Movies like Indiana Jones are a throw back to the 30′s and 40′s movie serials which was a time when actors didn’t keep in shape the same way as they do now. The one exception then perhaps being Buster Crabbe the original movie Flash Gordon.

One movie that I’m really looking foreword to this year is ‘Iron Man’. I happened to see one of the early teaser promos for this movie last year and thought wow.

Now interestingly enough I read something over at Screen Rant, who cited a source as saying Iron Man is not expected to do to well in the box office due to the release of the video game ‘Grand Theft Auto 4′ which is sold out in most UK stores. The site refuted the sources oppion as bogus and revealed that they thought ‘Speed Racer’ would likely impact on Iron Man’s takings in the second weekend at the Box Office. Though I tend to agree with Vic’s veiwpoint about GTA gamers being amongst the same group of people who will see Iron Man. I do find the notion of Gamers staying at home playing GTA instead of going to see the movie kind of funny.

Anyway their logic, (Not Screenrants Logic) but certain other parties is that the people buying GTA 4 are the same people who would normally pay to see something like ‘Iron Man’ at the movies. Which I find somewhat amusing because am sure the comic book character of Iron Man does not speak with a Russian Accent and go about his days carjacking and shooting peoples kneecaps from under them for sport. I mean come on, GTA 4 or Iron Man. Am off to my local movie theatre as soon as I find time in my week to do so, hopefully before next weekend. Hell I may even buy a copy of GTA 4 on my way home too boot.

Screen Rant and I personally feel that the very same gamers will go and see the new Iron Man movie. Fact is I will probably see the new Iron Man movie before I even contemplate getting GTA 4. Hell I will rent GTA 4 and get the gore fest over and done with.

Either way. It is worth pointing out that Marvel are hedging their bets with Iron Man by also releasing a video game of the movie which will pretty much be out on most major formats. So perhaps GTA4 will out sell the Iron Man game.

Other movies to look foreword too from my point of view are ‘Doomsday’, ‘Dark Knight’, ‘Prince Caspian’ and perhaps the new remake of Jules Verne’s classic story ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Earth’ which sounds like a lot of 3D fun. In fact so much so that even producer Charlotte Huggins is describing the movie as a fun ride.

In closing I’d like to invite you comments and ask what movies you all are looking foreword to seeing over the summer.

What I said at Screen Rant is that I don’t believe that GTA4 will impact Iron Man ticket sales. Everyone ELSE is saying that.

And the connection is that people who play video games are generally going to be the same ones interested in superhero movies.

Sorry about that. I goofed up. What I meant to say and was trying too rather clumsily was that you were citing sources as having said that, but you refuted it by saying that Iron Man would more than likely be a tad more theatoned by Speed Racer.

Anyway have made the corrections and still managed to keep my humour in there.

    No harm was intended.

Hi Guru, I am glad I pressed harder enough until I found movie spoilers, because this post on Iron Clad Summer Movies And The Movies I’ll Be Looking To Go See was extremely helpful. Just last Tuesday I was pondering on this quite a bit.
