After a 27 year wait it looks like Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan is finally set to get a comic book adaptation.
Although it never started out life as a comic book, Star Trek has a long standing association with the comic book world, which dates back to the early 1970’s here in the UK when the first Star Trek comic strips first started appearing in the TV: 21 yearly annuals.
Throughout the 1980’s DC comics ran a line of book’s, and again throughout the early 1990’s with comic book series based on TNG, DS9 and Star Trek Voyager.
In recent year’s IDW have held the license to produce comics based in the Star Trek Universe, and in spite of a dodgy start with some of the worst art work known to man or beast, IDW seem to be getting it right more than wrong according to the many reviews.
Doing the adaptation for Khan is writer Andy Schmidt who will be joined by artist Chee Yang Ong.
In a recent interview for Newsarama Andy Schmidt revealed that this three part mini series may not be a word for word interpretation of the movie, but promises that it will be respectful of all that made the movie so special. When asked his opinion about comic book adaptations of movies this is what Schmidt had to say.
“Personally, I don’t care for an adaptation that just packs every line of dialogue into the comic without giving consideration to the fact that it is a comic, not a movie. The reading experience is different. In that regard, I believe my adaptation is extremely faithful. No line of dialogue was altered without a reason as to why. What I tried to stay true to was the characters and the themes of the film.”
If fans are a little worried about this attitude don’t be. The writer also told Newsarama that he has studied the script for the movie, and has tried to stay as true as possible to the core themes and characters.
You can expect this three part comic book mini series to start rolling out every alternate week starting in June.
