In a recent chat with Collider.com actor Johnny Depp revealed that work is underway on the long anticipated movie adaptation of popular Science Fiction/Horror series Dark Shadows.
“Dark Shadows is happening,” says Depp. “Tim is working on Alice in Wonderland which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with Alice and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”
Although Dark Shadows enjoyed some play on the UK Sci-Fi Channel when it launched in 1996/7 the series is near on unknown to UK Viewers, but enjoys a massive cult following in the USA. The series centred on a large mansion that didn’t have any supernatural elements. Then the writers began to introduce ghosts, but the show really began to get noticed when vampire Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid) was introduced, initially as a 13-week gimmick.
From that point on the series got weirder and weirder and even developed a few stories, which involved time travel.
The series, which first aired in 1966 ran continuously for six years and a total of 1245 episodes were made.
A remake of the show was attempted in 1991 but had little impact and ran for a mere 13 episodes.
