It would seem that Disney pulling out of The Chronicles Of Narnia franchise hasn’t really had that much of a detrimental effect on the movie series, which is based on the popular C.S. Lewis’ books.

Disney Drops Narnia

News broke late on Christmas Eve that Disney would be pulling their financing from any future Narnia movies, including the forthcoming Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, which is based on the third book in the CS Lewis series.

The studio was set to co – finance Dawn Treader in their continuing collaboration with Walden Media, who Disney partnered with on the first two movies.

A recent report from Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney have pulled out for what they claim to be budgetary and logistical reasons.

The first film in the franchise, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, cost $180 million (£122 million) to make and made around $745 million (£505 million) at the worldwide box office. Second instalment Prince Caspian had a budget of $200 million (£135 million) but grossed just $419 million (£284 million) worldwide, a significant drop from the previous movie.

Dawn Treader is already in production, and all key players have signed on for their respective roles. However news broke earlier this month that the movie would be made for a slightly more modest budget.

Despite Disney dropping out, and a reportedly more modest budget for the third instalment of Chronicles Of Narnia, Walden are looking to move ahead with production, and Fox studios are likely contenders to take over from Disney as the co – producers of the movie.

Earlier this year, it was rumoured that the Narnia franchise would end with Dawn Treader after producer Mark Johnson said that there were no plans to adapt any of the remaining four books.

Dawn Treader Taking On Water

Jim Hill Media reports that Disney’s Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, which is the third instalment in the Narnia series, could well be in trouble.

Prince Caspian didn’t perform as well as many had hoped, and as a consequence of that. Production on the third movie in the series may have to be delayed or scaled back.

Disney and Walden Media are still moving forward with production on the film, and director Michael Apted has been overseeing production on the movie since June 2007, and actors have already been cast for the various new roles that need to be filled.

Will Poulter who is best known for his work in this years Son Of Rambow movie has been cast in the role of Eustace Scrubb, a cousin of the Pevensie children.

Studio space has also been lined up for production at Baja Studios in Rosarito Beach for a four to five month shoot.

All this aside Disney haven’t exactly been forthcoming on whether or not production on Voyage Of The Dawn Treader has a green light or not. Both Disney and Walden media share the concern that the third chapter in the Narnia series may return even less box office than Caspian did, which is why they are looking into cost cutting measures for the film.

The original plans to shoot Dawn Treader on location in Malta, Iceland and Prague have been dropped. Two-thirds of this film will be shot in Mexico in the huge water tank that James Cameron used for Titanic.

Added to all this reports indicate that Walden Media wants Disney to fund half of a $140 million production. But given that Disney is contractually obligated to cover the costs of all prints and advertising on the Narnia movies, Disney is supposedly pushing for a $100 million version instead. It’s also likely that a release date will be pushed back to 2011.
