Brad Wright Discusses Orgins Of Stargate Universe

Written by Ian Cullen on January 27, 2010 – 10:56 am -

When it comes to the Stargate Universe and, of course, the new series Stargate: Universe, one of the main driving forces behind the scenes on the show is writer and Executive Producer Brad Wright, who discusses the origins of the new series in issue 32 of Stargate Magazine.

The good folks at Titan Magazines have kindly provided the following excerpts, which you can read below:

Invasions from outer space, wormholes, parasitic life-forms, alternate universes—such phenomena are ‘alien’, no pun intended, to most people, but for Brad Wright, they have become second nature.

For much of his career as a writer/producer, he has been part of creative environments where out-of-this-world beings and situations are embraced. Since 1997, Wright has served as a co-creator/executive producer for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Earlier this year, a second spin-off was added to the successful franchise’s stable in the form of Stargate Universe. The show was conceived in much the same way as SG-1 and Atlantis, but its actual ‘birth’ came slightly out of the blue.

SGU Ladies Discuss What It Takes To Be Gate Girls!

Written by Ian Cullen on January 26, 2010 – 11:20 am -

There have been a lot of genre shows that have generated a fair bit of buzz this year, and one such show, which seems to have generated huge amounts of buzz in the fan base is Stargate Universe.

The series, which was born from the same creative minds that brought us Stargate SG1 and SG Atlantis has got people talking because of its darker and grittier story telling, and of course the strong female role models that have come forth.

In issue 32 of the Official Stargate Magazine features interviews with Ming – Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman who reveal what it takes to portray a powerful woman in Stargate Universe.

You can read excerpts from all three interviews below:

Ming – Na (Camille Wray)

Longtime fans of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis are familiar with the International Oversight Authority (IOA), a group of bureaucratic busybodies who love poking their noses into our heroes’ comings and goings through the Stargate.

On Stargate Universe, IOA representative Camille Wray finds herself a long way from home onboard the Ancient ship Destiny. Given the IOA’s reputation, she is trying to balance her professional instincts and compassionate nature, especially as one of the mediators between the military and civilians. It is not easy, but actress Ming-Na, who plays Camille, is enjoying the challenge.

“The hardest thing when you’re playing a strong female character is not having her come off as a bitch and someone who everyone wants to hate, and being an IOA official, that’s especially important for Camille,” explains Ming-Na. “Robert Cooper [series co-creator/ executive producer] and I had a conversation where I mentioned this, and they decided to change my character’s job with the IOA from accounting to something else. They suggested human resources and I said, ‘Oh, that would be fantastic, because then she’s a people person.’ “I immediately latched onto that. Read more »

The Cast of Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe will return for a second season, and Sanctuary for a third on the Syfy Channel, according to tvbythenumbers.com.

The new seasons of both series are expected to debut in the fall of 2010.

SGU recently aired its fall finale for Season One, and is expected to return in April when the rest of the first year will be shown.  Ratings for the most recent member of the Stargate franchise have averaged 2.6 million when 7-day DVR viewing is included. According to the site, Syfy is on record of having trouble monetizing the DVR viewing, but the Stargate franchise remains popular internationally, which appears to be having a strong influence on the network.

The Cast of Season Two of Sanctuary

Sanctuary has averaged 2.2 million viewers with live plus seven data factored in.  The show has a devoted following around the world, and remains the first program to make the jump from the Internet to a television program.
