This Week in Spandex – Avengers Academy #3
Written by Nicholas Yanes on August 30, 2010 – 11:49 am -Hey all,
Sorry this review is late. The semester has just started and the first week was kind of hectic. But worse than that, I had a hard time simply deciding which issue I wanted to review this week. All the books that I got this week were fine, but none really stood out as the book I had to preach about. I think this is because while all the books were okay, they were all in middle of a story arc. So I went back to my store and found that they had neglected to put Avengers Academy #3 in my box. Once I realized this, I knew I had found my pick.
Avengers Academy #3- “Scared Straight Part1: Boyfriend in a Coma”
- Writer: Christos Gage
- Penciler: Mike McKone
- Company: Marvel Comics
I really love this series. I’ve mentioned in the past that I liked this title because as someone who owns Disney stock, I truly feel that these characters are fantastic intellectual properties worthy of existing beyond the pages of a comic book. This issue not only reinforces my capitalistic deconstruction of this series, but also highlights just how good the book is on its own merits.
Now just to be clear, if there is one thing that someone should take away from this title it is that Christos Gage is a writer with an incredible future.

This Week in Spandex: The Thanos Imperative #3 of 6
Written by Nicholas Yanes on August 16, 2010 – 2:44 pm -Cosmic Marvel – What the Next Marvel Video Game Should Be
It was hard to decide what issue I was going to review this week. The Unwritten #16 was fantastic as always. But I want to wait till issue 18 so I can properly process this arc. While the comic book that I decided to review is also in mid arc, I felt that I have paid such little attention to Marvel’s Cosmic characters that it was about time that I did.
The Thanos Imperative #3 of 6- Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
- Artist: Miguel Sepulveda
- Company: Marvel Comics
Beginning with the 2006 miniseries, Annihilation, Marvel Comics has invested a lot of time and talent into developing their cosmic characters. Marvel followed Annihilation with a new Guardians of the Galaxy series and Annihilation Conquest. After Conquest was finished, Marvel’s cosmic franchise experienced the War of Kings which ended with Black Bolt and Vulcan being (believed to be) killed in an explosion that created a hole in the fabric of time and space. This tear in space/time also leads to an alternate reality in which a type of creature has infected all biological sentient life forms and is looking for a new universe to infect. This Week in Spandex: Doomwar
Written by Nicholas Yanes on August 9, 2010 – 7:43 pm -This is the Black Panther that needs to be in Movies and Video Games
Deciding which book to review this week turned out to be a difficult choice for me. I absolutely loved S.H.I.E.L.D. #3. Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver are creating what could possibly be Marvel’s smartest series in decades. On top of this, Weaver’s art is absolutely beautiful. Weaver and the book’s colorists – Christina Strain and Justin Ponsor – have created a title with art that is so detailed and stunning, that every panel could be displayed at a gallery. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. features a plot that is so detailed and new, it would be a disservice to the title to simply review one title.
Luckily, this week finds another issue of DOOMWAR; sadly, it is also its last issue. DOOMWAR, and the previous Black Panther series, always seemed to me to be titles that are so good, yet unfortunately overlooked by the majority of comic buyers. I’ll go into further depth about this in the review, but the Black Panther that has been developed by Reginald Hudlin in recent years and is currently under the care of Jonathan Maberry is the Black Panther that needs to appear in movies, video games, and other mediums.
For those of you uninterested in comics and for those of you who do buy comics, but you just have no taste, the Black Panther title was relaunched a few years ago by Reginald Hudlin. Hudlin’s run featured T’Challa marrying Storm, and brilliantly developed the political structure of Wakanda. This volume came to an end during Secret Invasion.
