Warrior Babe Rachel Luttrell Talks Atlantis
8 September 2005
Stargate Atlantis, which is the spin – off from the hugely popular Stargate SG – 1 has introduced fans to a new group of characters, one of which is the stunning warrior woman Teyla Emmagan who is portrayed by Rachel Luttrell. Over the final few episodes of the first season we discovered that Teyla had Wraith DNA that put her in an ideal position to aid the SG Team of Atlantis in their ongoing battle against this new enemy. In a recent interview with Steven Eramo for Starburst magazine Luttrell talked about where she would like to go with her character for the second season of the show.
“This season I’m hoping to dig a little deeper into her culture and find out what she brings from that and how it fleshes her out as a person. When we first met Teyla she was this interesting sketch of a wise and powerful leader. Then slowly during Season One we learnt, among other things, that she can sense the Wraith and establish a two-way link with them. She’s always known this, but up to now her abilities weren’t as acute. They’re gradually growing stronger and it gives me yet another facet of my character to explore.”
Over the first season we saw how Teyla slowly become an integral part of Colonel Sheppard’s team, but according to Rachel Luttrell there is more to Teyla than just the wise warrior woman, and this is something that she has been discussing with the shows writers.
“I’ve been talking with the show’s writers about helping me find other elements of who Teyla is. Yes, we know she’s a warrior but there’s much more to her than that. The writers and I have also spoken about bringing back her people. They’ve sort of fallen by the wayside, and they’re such an important part of who she is.”
One character that the second season has introduced us too is Ronan who after having been hunted constantly by the Wraith is rescued by the Stargate team and proves to be a very able warrior in his own right when he takes on Colonel Sheppard and other members of his team in unarmed combat. Ronan’s character also begins to form a unique bond with Teyla.
“His experiences are closely linked to Teyla’s as far as how they grew up and the pressures they were under. I’m not exactly sure where the writers may be taking this relationship, but there’s definitely a connection between him and Teyla. So there’s plenty for me to look foreword to this year with my character.”
