Since it premiered back in 2001 Smallville has been somewhat of a cutting edge and controversial take on the mythology and the origins of Superman, we have seen the journey that Clark Kent (Tom Welling) traversed during his teenage years in the small town backdrop of Smallville and the friends and enemies he made along the way. This premise obviously gave writers the opportunity to write about Clark 's unrequited love for Lana Lang who is portrayed by Kristin Kreuk, and if there is one thing that Kreuks portrayal of Lana Lang isn't lacking and its depth and character. In a new interview for Dreamwatch magazine the actress revealed her feelings on the changing fates of her character for the fourth season of Smallville.

One thing which shook up the status quo towards the tail end of season three was Lana Lang's decision to leave Smallville sell up her shares in the coffee house and seek some of the answers she was looking for in Paris . This story thread was almost picked up on immediately in the opening few instalments of the fourth season when a tattoo mysteriously appears on her lower back via supernatural causes, thus begins a new journey for Lana Lang.

“The tattoo on Lana's back and everything going on with [the 17 th Century witch] Isabel have definitely shifted Lana's focus. It's ended up causing her to push a lot of things there were important to Lana off onto the edges of her life for the first time. I think viewers can perceive that in the fact that you don't see Lana communicating with very many people this year – you only see her with a certain few.”

One character that Lana is still very much involved with is Jason Lana's new Boyfriend. Kreuk feels that Jason is a great counterpoint for Lana and brings her out of her space, and the actress also feels that Lana is very appreciative of Jason being so attentive to her. However with the shift in story lines this year Kreuk is unsure as to how he fits into Lana's journey. “As the storyline shifts, we don't know exactly what Jason's purpose is and we don't really know why he is there.”

Lana however has bigger issues to deal with than her Boyfriend, though his support would probably be appreciated. However Lana's sudden dealings with supernatural forces do make one wonder if she would emphasise with Clark if she was aware of the secret which he has hidden from her.

“I think she'd definitely be more empathetic. Of course, it depends on where everything goes, but as I know Lana now. I believe she'd be much more empathetic. At this point in time I think she'd be a lot more open to the fact that there are aliens on Earth because of what she's experienced with [being possessed by] Isabel.”

Smallville has allowed Kreuk to work with and meet many actors from prior generations, and this season Kreuk has gotten to work with former Bond Girl, Jane Seymour who made a name for herself in peoples living rooms for her portrayal of ‘Dr Quinn Medicine Woman'. When asked about her working experience with the British actress Kreuk revealed that it was a little strange.

“It's so strange because my family and I used to watch Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman every once in awhile, and it can be a bit of a surreal experience to work with someone you've seen on television before.”

With Smallville being a part of the huge mythology which surrounds the Superman franchise, then it comes as no surprise that the people involved in this series are very thoughtful and respectful of the Superman franchise and the mythology which surrounds it. Kreuk admits to not being an exception to that rule.

“I have thought about that on many occasions. It's pretty incredible how long this story and this mythology have been around. It's great to be a part of something that is so timeless and ageless… to be a part of this epic journey that these characters are on.”
