To say superheroes are big right now is an understatement. These costumed characters who battle evil, travel to amazing locations, have strange powers and go on extraordinary adventures can be seen everywhere you go. While most of these characters have been around in some form or another for years, it’s movies where they have really taken off.
Going back to the 1940s, you could read about these character in their comic books. Superman, Captain America, Batman and Wonder Woman all date back to this era, with the next twenty plus years bringing Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Green Lantern, The Flash, The Hulk and countless others. They have remained popular to some degree over time and have often appeared in other media. Movies and TV shows have been common but we are overwhelmed with the amount of films they appear in. This year, 2017, has brought us Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Logan, Lego Batman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarök, Power Rangers and even Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, among many more.
2018 is set to be an even bigger for these costumed heroes in cinema, with a whole slew of new films for fans to get excited about. Black Panther starts things off in February, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe giving focus to the King of Wakanda, who had previously appeared in Captain America: Civil War. Ready Player One in March features many popular characters from different media, with some superheroes making appearances. The New Mutants hits screens in April and is a horror take on the X-Men franchise. Avengers: Infinity War is on track to be the biggest film of the year and will boast countless Marvel characters joining together for the first time.
The squeal to the surprise hit Deadpool, comes out in June and will include Josh Brolin as fan favourite X-Men hero, Cable. Pixar unleashes their own squeal, with Incredibles 2 picking up where the original 2004 film ended. In July Ant-Man and the Wasp carries on the story of Marvel’s diminutive hero and DC adapt their popular TV show Teen Titans Go! For the big screen. In October, Sony’s first Spider-Man spin-off Venom will star Tom Hardy as the titular anti-hero. The X-Men return in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuts Miles Morales on the big screen and Aquaman all launch later in the year.
Of course, it’s not just the cinema, DVDs and streaming services where you can catch up with your favourite heroes. Every store, every website, every item you come across will have branded merchandise tying into all these characters. There’s always video games featuring heroes, with Sony’s new Spider-Man game, Telltale’s Batman: The Enemy Within, further updates to Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, My Hero Academia: Battle for All that’s based on the popular Manga and Animé, and Casino Slot Guru Justice League online slots games are something you can try.
Even this is all a drop in the ocean. Toys, clothes, food, electronics, home essentials, bedding and wherever else you can think of can have an image of Batman, Spider-Man and more on them. Even if you somehow avoided all the comics and movies featuring super-heroes, you’re bound to catch them somewhere.
