Benicio Del Toro is apparently in discussions to star in Shane Black’s forthcoming reboot of ‘Predator’.
The 1980s producer mainstays John Davis, Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon are all on board to produce the movie.
Plot details for the film are at present being kept under wraps, but is rumoured to be an ensemble cast, which will be headed up by Del Toro.
The actor and the studio have been dancing for months around this project, but one challenge has been been Del Toro’s schedule.
The original ‘Predator’ movie was a huge hit back in 1987 for Arnold Schwarzenegger and co-starred ‘Rocky’s’ Carl Weavers and Jesse Ventura as commandos being stalked in a jungle by a fearsome alien. Directed by John McTernan. It was one of the movies, which cemented Schwarzenegger’s credibility as a Box Office Action Star.
Shane Black, whose last movie was the comedic action movie ‘Nice Guys’ created the ‘Lethal Weapon’ movies, wrote the treatment for the script of the ‘Predator’ reboot, which was written by Fred Dekker, Black’s university chum with whom he wrote 1987’s ‘Monster Squad’.
For Del Toro, if a deal is made, Predator will continue his franchise-movie streak. The star has for years worked in gritty dramas but recently started to branch out into more populist franchise movies. He appeared in 2014’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and is slated to appear in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’.
If this film does indeed move forward. It would have an uphill battle given how loved the original incarnation of ‘Predator’ is. Or at least was until they ruined the credibility of the franchise with the dumb ‘Aliens Vs Predator’ movies.
I’d be more than happy to give this movie a go if they do something new with it and don’t overly rely on what has come before.
