The Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler, opened on Wednesday night, February 15th, to packed houses, with adults leaving the theaters smiling and kids feeling wonderfully powerful. The Black Panther was not only visually brilliant, with tremendous performances, and great action sequences, but it had broad strokes of a socially and greatly missing morality, which The Black Panther delivers on in spades.
Apart from the amazingly strong cast of characters, one of the most powerful personalities on the screen was Danai Gurira’s performance and portrayal of General Okoye, leader of the all female force called the Dora Milaje, tasked with protecting the Wakandan King and Black Panther.
Perhaps best known for her ongoing and memorable portrayal of the strong zombie slaying ‘Michonne‘ on AMC’s, The Walking Dead; Gurira’s performance in Marvel’s latest super hero epic, The Black Panther, has elevated the beautiful star to a whole new level of elegance. With a sophisticated and commanding performance that makes Danai Gurira as much a super hero as almost any other.
To be sure, fellow cast members Chadwick Boseman, who plays the King of Wakanda and Black Panther, as well as Luptia Nyong’o (Nakia), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Angela Basset (Ramonda), Forest Whitaker (Zuri), along with many other members of the films cast gave amazing performances, but it is perhaps Gurira’s performance that was powerful beyond words! It was the quite strength, piercing gaze, and imposing presence of the ever present, loyal, and fierce Okoye, that helped make The Black Panther as a good of a movie as it was!
Clearly, Gurira’s General Okoye is a force to be reckoned with, whose power, strength, beauty, and ferocity commands notice and cements Danai Gurira as not just a strong woman, and champion of both her race and gender, but as a super hero as well!
Go see The Black Panther this weekend, bring the kids, sit back, be entertained, feel morally strong, and enjoy it!
