BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – April 20, 2020 – Kyle Sullivan and Katie Boyer, the creators of the Trekspertise channel on YouTube, are branching out from their popular video essays on science fiction and Star Trek. The duo completed principal photography on a short titled Garden of the Gods in February, and today they released the film’s official trailer and launched a crowdfunding campaign on Seed & Spark.
“The film is already shot. That footage exists,” said Kyle Sullivan, the YouTube videos’ narrator and director of the short film. “Now we’re moving on to the post-production phase, where the footage will be sculpted into its final form.”
Garden of the Gods is a modern adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe story “The Cask of Amontillado,” a classic tale of psychological deception and revenge. Set in Birmingham, Alabama, the Trekspertise creators’ version of the story follows two small-time drug dealers.
Mike, the main character, is fed up with casually insensitive remarks from his sometime business partner Felix. Using the promise of a marijuana strain called “Garden of the Gods,” Mike lures Felix from a crowded party to an empty home, where he meets his reckoning behind a steadily-growing cinder block wall.
“We enjoy doing the videos on Trekspertise,” said Sullivan, “and we’ll keep doing those. But we also want to do our own narrative projects, and we’ve been wanting to do this one for years. We hope to move from here into a full-length, fully scifi feature.”
For now, though, the goal of the crowdfunding campaign is to raise money for post-production tasks such as film editing, music composition, sound design, and film festival entry fees.
“Birmingham’s film community may be small, but it’s mighty,” said Boyer, who wrote the script and executive produced the film. “I can’t wait to show off the hard work of our tremendously talented cast and crew.”
Boyer also notes that the production team will not be holding onto any funds raised through the Seed & Spark campaign. Instead, contributions will be passed along to the post-production team, which includes various industry professionals from the Southeast.
