From 1987 until 1993 Norm Breyfogle was the regular illustrator on Detective Comics, as well working on the Batman series from 1990 to 1992. As of late, fans of Breyfogle’s art will have seen his work on Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger and Batman Beyond.
On December 17, Norm Breyfogle was hospitalized after suffering from a stroke, which has left not only his health, but his future illustration work in question. Recently, Breyfogle’s ex-wife, Barbara De La Rue, was kind enough to update Breyfogle’s Facebook page and said the following:
“This is Barb I’m norm’s ex from California. Norm won’t be answering any txt’s from you friends out there. Norm just had a stroke and is in the hospital. Please keep him in your thoughts and your prayers. At this point norm is expecting a full recovery but time will tell.”
Since this posting, Breyfogle has indeed been moved to a health care facility closer to his family in the upper Michigan area. His ex-wife has gone on to update Breyfogle’s fans with the following information:
“His whole left side is paralyzed and he fears not being able to walk or even draw ever again, since he draws with his left hand. But, at the same time he is trying to keep positive and wants to get better.”
With mounting and ongoing bills for prolonged therapy and daily nursing, friends and family of Breyfogle have organized a crowdsourcing fundraiser on Norms behalf through YouCaring.com. Fellow artist, Gerry Conway has called on the artist’s long-time employer, DC Comics, to help in the effort to help Breyfogle in his hour of need at:
If Norm Breyfogle’s work has given you hours of Bat-tainment, perhaps you might be inclined to contribute to Breyfogle’s recovery.
