By now you have seen, or at least heard of, that leaked test footage for the ‘Deadpool’ movie that didn’t happen. It was put together by Blur Studios, an animation and visual effects company, for 20th Century Fox and voiced by Ryan Reynolds. Various sources, including ‘Deadpool’ creator Rob Liefeld, confirmed that it is the footage that was rumored to exist years ago when a ‘Deadpool’ movie was still looking like a near sure thing.
Over all, fan reaction has been very positive. So positive that despite Fox’s efforts to take the footage down, it is their property after all, it keeps popping up again just as fast. Not unlike the Merc With a Mouth, this thing just can’t be killed. Not bad for something that looks like someone recorded with a cell phone off another screen. But now you can even find the original high res version here and there. If you have not seen it, it is everything you would want from a movie about Wade Wilson. Funny, violent, and 4th wall breaking ‘Deadpool.’
So why hasn’t Fox made this movie yet? It comes down to money for one, and probably some studio politics. But on the money side, if the movie were made to the same specs as this test footage, it would have to be R rated for violence and some language. Spending millions on an R rated film is a risk for any studio. Sure, it does not seem like it would be such a risk considering how badly fans want this movie, but it is still a risk. And the ‘X-Men’ brand just got back on its feet with First Class and Days of Future Past. Wade is part of that brand and it’s doubtful any of the Fox execs want to risk the momentum they have built. And that’s just in terms of today. Prior to ‘X-Men: First Class,’ the X brand was not doing so hot and Ryan Reynolds had that ‘Green Lantern’ misfortune. And lets face it, Reynolds at the time was the only conceivable person who could be ‘Deadpool.’ The test footage proves that much.
Don’t expect Fox to suddenly announce a ‘Deadpool’ film any time soon. But the buzz the test footage has created is pretty hard to ignore. A ‘Deadpool’ film will happen one way or another. The character is too popular to not be banked on. But due to the nature of Wade, the right set of circumstances and possibilities has to exist for Fox to green light something. Maybe this leak has made the financial pool a little more welcoming to the studio.
