Synopsis: As Mr. Wednesday begins recruitment for the coming battle, Shadow Moon travels with him to Chicago, and agrees to a very high stakes game of checkers with the old Slavic god, Czernobog.
Review: Picking things up from where last week left off. Shadow Moon reconnects with Mr. Wednesday and the two begin their road trip via America’s back roads. There first stop is Chicago to try and persuade Czernobog to join their cause.
Along the way. Shadow Moon has an encounter with The Goddess Media (Gillian Anderson) who has a far less aggressive means of recruitment than Techno Boy.
As with last week. Ian McShane totally rocks as the mysterious Mr Wednesday and his scenes with the sisters of the constellations and Czernobog are wonderfully orchestrated a lot of fun to watch.
Peter Stormare is seriously scary as the Slavic god Czernobog and his scenes with Ricky Whittle’s Shadow Moon are not only high stakes, but chilling to the bone.
We also get treated to Orlando Jones putting in a powerhouse performance as Anansi aka Mr Nancy. His introduction scene at the beginning of the episode is impressive to say the least. If I say more than that. I’m giving to much away for those that haven’t watched yet.
I’m told that Mr Nancy has a pretty big part to play later in the series when he becomes involved with Mr Wednesday and Shadow Moon.
This second episode moves things along at a great pace and we learn a few more bits and pieces about Wednesday along the way.
I particularly enjoyed Wednesday’s brief chat with Shadow Moon where he talks about the old ways of sending telegrams instead of texting on mobile phones. It’s a small moment, but its a fun one that illustrates the differences between the old gods and the new ones that are attempting to replace them.
The episode leaves off with somewhat of a cliffhanger that will keep fans wondering for the next week.
American Gods airs every Sunday at 9pm ET on Starz and on Monday’s via Amazon Prime for UK viewers.
