In Review: Big Finish: Torchwood: Instant Karma

... a remarkably timely piece about loneliness, alienation, and Groupthink...

Synopsis: Imagine. All those people. The ones who make each day that little bit harder — that little bit more unbearable.

Imagine if you could silence them. Just by looking at them.

I mean, just imagine. If you could do that. To all the people who annoy you. Would you do it?

Review: I wish Torchwood: Instant Karma came with extras. I’d love to know how writers David Llewellyn, James Goss, and Jonathan Morris divided the work. Did one handle themes, while the other two tackled structure and characterization? Did each take responsibility for writing one of the characters in this extremely well-balanced three-hander?

Whatever their process was, the result is a remarkably timely piece about loneliness, alienation, and Groupthink. At this point, I’m mostly over allegory. Too many writers are using it as a crutch these days and achieving sad levels of mediocrity. Llewellyn, Goss, and Morris rise above that trend by remembering that allegory should serve the characters, not the other way around.

Naoko Mori, Jonny Dixon, and Sara McGaughey play extremely well off each other. Each also gets space to build character apart from the other two, which is impressive considering they only have an hour to work with.

Big Finish continues to impress with their Torchwood range. I’m glad they gave listeners this quieter palate cleanser before the larger scope of Torchwood One: Machines.

Raissa Devereux became a life-long genre fan at the age of four when she first saw The Wizard of Oz at a screening at Arizona State University. Years later, she graduated from A.S.U. as an English major, History minor, Whovian, and Trekkie. Now a Florida transplant, she loves the opportunity Sci-Fi Pulse has given her to further explore space travel, time travel, masked heroes, gothic castles, and good yarns.
