Synopsis: Glynteg was never much of a place. Since the refinery’s shut down there’s been nothing much going on – no jobs, no money, more pubs than buses. One of those sad Welsh towns where’s there’s little to do but drink.
Then the frakking company came and there was a brief spark of hope – maybe there’d be some jobs, at least. But that fizzled out. Instead, the people started falling ill.
Gwen Cooper’s come to Glynteg to find out what’s happening. Something ancient has woken up beneath the ground and will do whatever it can to protect itself. The Hunters have been unleashed, and there’s only one way to stay safe.
Review: According to the Extra Interviews, Writer/Producer James Goss developed Torchwood: Smashed when star Eve Myles suggested doing a story involving Gwen being drunk. Myles was inspired by the period of accidental sobriety in her own life. She had simply become to busy to partake. Goss took her kernel of an idea and transformed it into an excellent allegory.
I really felt for the people of Glynteg. There are many towns like that in the U.S. too. Kezrena James and Big Finish newcomer Omar Austin did wonderful jobs bringing the psychology of the place to life. Helen Griffin, whom everyone gushed over with reason in the interviews, gave an outstandingly unapologetic performance personifying corporate greed and apathy.
Thank you again, Big Finish, for giving Torchwood the space to be the best version of itself, warts and all. I look forward to many more adventures.
