Synopsis: Can the Doctor save Christmas? Is Santa a myth, a man, or a Time Lord? Are chimneys bigger on the inside?
Review: In part one of this special. Titan continues the Doctor Who Christmas tradition with an intriguing, but yet rather Christmassy mystery.
While making plans for the festive holidays. The Doctor and her friends try to recall their last adventure at a theme park, but all have different memories of the events. In each different version of events, one of them was almost eaten or tricked in a confidence scam. Wanting to get to the bottom of things. The Doctor attempts to retrace their steps in hopes that they can figure things out. Their journey leads them to a small planet and a small alien who is not too sure if he is pleased to see them again. After a brief discussion, The Doctor and her friends learn that a mysterious being or person known as Mr. Henderson has been taking people from the planet and none have ever returned.
So The Doctor, Graham, Yaz and, and Ryan set course for another world in search of the mysterious Mr. Henderson, but do not get a warm reception when they arrive.
Doing the art duties on this story is Roberta Ingranata and she does a fairly decent job. She’s a little hit and miss with the character likenesses. For example, her version of Yaz looks a little older than the character we see on the television show. But you do have to allow for artist interpretation and the effects of space-time. I mean I think I’d look older after adventuring with The Doctor.
Where the artwork really shines though is when we get to the planets. The first one is pretty cool looking, but its the second world that the fam visits, which screams Christmas at you. Right down to the snowtopped building, candy canes and toy soldiers.
Writer Jody Houser has managed to offer up an intriguing Christmas mystery here and leaves us with a fantastic cliffhanger and a few questions. One of which being, ‘is Santa really a bad guy?’
I can’t wait to find out.
This rather fun Christmas Special is the first part of a two-part story and it goes on sale in all good comics stores on 13 November.
