In Review: : Lavalantula

Acting wise. If there is an award for keeping a straight face while participating in such an absurd and funny movie. These guys deserve it.

Synopsis: When volcanic eruptions in Los Angeles unleash a new breed of gigantic lava breathing tarantulas, it falls on washed up movie star and action hero, Colton West, to save the city and its population from total devastation.

Review: This is the first of two Lavalantula movies, which I found on Amazon and figured it be fun to watch.

The movie reunites Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow and Marian Ramsey of ‘Police Academy’ fame and pits them against some rather nasty CGI Lavalantua or fire breathing spiders.

Acting wise. If there is an award for keeping a straight face while participating in such an absurd and funny movie. These guys deserve it.

The story is basically a spoof of pretty much every disaster movie you have ever seen and then some.

I particularly enjoyed Nia Peeples moment in the movie where she takes on one of the Lavalantula’s with a Samurai Sword, some throwing stars and a shield.

As far as spoofs go this is outrageous on the same level as the hilarious Sharknado movies, which get a brief nod here.

The film also has some fun meta moments near the start where leading man Colton West is complaining about being cast in an action movie about fighting bugs.

The CGI is good enough for what this movie does. It’s not meant to be believable. Just a fun movie to help waste 90 minutes or so while providing a good few laughs.

Steve Guttenberg inhabits the role of Colton West and fully commits to the action. His big rousing speech toward the end of the movie kind of mirrors the Presidents Speech toward the end of Independence Day, which it is obviously trying to spoof.

Overall. This is a fun movie to waste a little time with and does the job it sets out to do. Which is provide a few laughs and what the F moments.

All the actors commit fully to their respective roles and the finale battle between the Queen Lavalantula is really well executed and funny as hell.

If your up for a laugh and haven’t seen it. It’s well worth the rental, but its not a keeper.
