IN REVIEW: MACGYVER: SEASON 4 – Save + The + Dam + World

The Phoenix team move to prevent Codex from detonating a weapon of mass destruction.

Synopsis: With Mac and Riley undercover with Codex, hoping to stop the organization from within, their mission is interrupted when Russ, Desi and the Phoenix team move to prevent Codex from detonating a weapon of mass destruction.

The Story

Mac and Riley have infiltrated CODEX and MacGyver’s Aunt Gwen is thrilled to have him on her team, but when Mac meets the man behind CODEX Leland. He begins to get a true sense of how far CODEX is prepared to go, but he also learns that the group has been around since the 14th Century. During his conversation with Leland. MacGyver learns that Russ Taylor was made an offer by CODEX, which he turned down.

After the meeting with Leland. Mac is reunited with Riley as they leave on their first mission for CODEX. While driving to the meeting point Mac and Riley are stopped by Russ and Desi who believe Mac has betrayed them. A tense few moments ensues in which MacGyver has to convince Russ and Desi that they are still on the same side. Mac tells Russ that CODEX has a nuclear bomb and they are planning something big. MacGyver believes that he can still convince his Aunt that she is on the wrong side and is allowed to continue with his undercover mission.

Jeri Ryan is fantastic as MacGyver’s aunt. We get a great flashback scene in which Gwen and her sister, MacGyver’s mother are on a road trip somewhere, but suddenly have to stop as Mac’s mother goes into labor. It’s a cute scene, which not only establishes Gwen’s bond to MacGyver but also reveals how he got his first name of Angus.  We get another great scene with Gwen where Leland, who is played by the brilliant Tobin Bell attempts to have Mac killed and tries to justify his actions to a distraught Gwen.

Also brilliant this week is Henry Ian Cusick who not only has some great scenes with Lucas Till’s MacGyver but also has a wonderful scene toward the end of the episode with Gwen who is looking to help MacGyver prevent the nuke from going off.

A great episode, which kind of felt like a season finale given how it ended. We get great performances from all the actors and although CODEX is beaten for now. You get the strong impression that they could well return at some future date, which can only be a good thing.
