Synopsis: When Nancy’s quest to clear Carson’s name clashes with Owen’s pursuit of Justice for the victims of the Bonny Scot, she’ll have to decide just how far she’s willing to go to get her dad…
Review: This week’s episode sees Nancy and her gang help out a refugee who could be key to helping take down the Hudson family.
Quite a lot happens in this week’s episode, which starts with Nancy being haunted some more by Lucy Sable who leads her to a box of her mother’s old files, which happen to be under the stairs. As Nancy inspects the files she finds out that her mother was a guidance counselor and actually worked with dead Lucy, but when Nancy opens Lucy’s file the contents have been ripped out. Spurred on by this discovery Lucy visits her father and while talking with him she asks about the file. Her father says he did not know about it but pleads with Nancy not to follow it up.
Having visited her dad in Jail. Nancy is determined to find a way to get him out and prove his innocence. To that end, she pays a visit to Everet Hudson the head of the Hudson family and somebody that her father did a lot of work for. Nancy asks what he’d need in exchange for helping her father and he says he’d like her to intervene with Owen Marvin’s investigating of the sinking of the Bonny Scot and bring him anything that she finds out. Of course, Nancy is torn about this but decides to kind of play along anyway given that she has a few friends in the Marvin family. At this point Nancy and Bess who has found out that she is officially a Marvin tail Owen and learn that he has been trying to help a refugee who was a member of the Bony Scot’s crew. But in exchange for their help, they need the man, who is very scared because he is being haunted, to testify against Everet Hudson with what he knows.
There’s a lot of great performances in this episode, but I think Maddison Jaizani was fantastic as Bess who has found out that she is indeed a member of one Horshoe Bay’s wealthiest families. The scenes where Bess meets her aunt for the first time are really well done. I also loved that Jaizani puts on her North London accent for the first time. Hopefully, she will keep it. I also enjoyed the dinner party scene at the close of the episode, which saw great acting performances from all concerned.
This show is getting spookier and spookier with the CGI effects from the ghosts. There’s a brilliant scene in which Nancy and her ex-boyfriend Nick visit the Refugee and find that he is being haunted by his old shipmates and seems to be reliving events of the sinking of the Bonny Scot. It was a fairly harrowing sequence to watch.
Overall. A really big episode, which is going to have some pretty big consequences for Nancy and her friends in the weeks and months to come.
