Synopsis: During a routine clean-up mission of the city slums, Vanessa and Monty are suddenly targeted by a group of human mercenaries serving one of the Infernal Archdukes. Under pressure, they accidentally stumble upon a new power, but disagreements caused tempers to flare up and they split apart. Will they be able to restore their partnership and finish the job or will their division mark the end of their adventures and even their lives?

Review: V and Monty have themselves a proper challenge in this issue.

The Story

While on a routine clean-up job. Vanessa and Monty get targeted with Astral weapons from a highly organized gang. While battling under pressure. The two accidentally stumble across a new power, which allows them to merge into one superpowered being.

The Artwork

The art team of Ben Herrera and Emmanuel Ordaz Torres really go to town this issue with some fantastic action sequences, which move the story on at a frantic pace. The drawing of the being that Vanessa and Monty merge into looked really cool.

Also good was the action sequence where we learn that the gang is using Astral weapons against Vanessa and Monty. Astral weapons being the only type that is capable of seriously hurting. Maybe evening killing a demon and hellhound.

Overall

Mario Mentasti provides some excellent dialogue for Vanessa and Monty, which really sells us on the idea that the two are still learning about what their strengths and weaknesses are. The falling out that they have after they discover their new power, which is really cool, was a misunderstanding based on the fact that they were under a bit more pressure than they have been in the past and we’re getting used to new abilities. I really appreciated that because it gave Monty and Vanessa a little more character and gave readers something to relate to them about.

Overall. A fantastic issue, which successfully builds on character development and a new storyline.
