From DC Comics and the creative team of Peter J. Tomasi (writer), Andy Kubert (artist & Inker), Jonathan Clapion (inker) and Brad Anderson (colorist), Robin Rises #1 is the special one shot comic I was hoping DC would put out in a celebration of Damian Wayne’s rebirth and return to the world of the living!
The book is well drawn and action packed with a beautiful two page spread at the end of the book featuring Batman and Robin swinging through the streets of Gotham in all of their Bat-Glory.
The book recounts the last pages of Batman and Robin #37 as Bruce Wayne returns from Apokalyps with his wayward group of heroes on their successful mission to save the youngest member of the Bat-team, Damian Wayne, A.K.A. ‘Robin’.
Only Kalibak, son of Apokolips himself, has followed them through the Boom tube in an effort to redeem himself in his father’s eyes and seek retribution on Batman for his transgressions in saving his son from the pits of Apokolips.
As the fight with Kalibak reaches its zenith and the Bat-Family seems on the verge of losing its fight with the off world and bitter devil spawn, an invigorated Damian Wayne, fresh from the door step of death, battles Kalibak with the strength of 20 men. Batman then flies a Bat-Jet straight into Kalibak, with Cyborg having reopened a Boom Tube just in the nick of time for the book’s nemesis to be sent where he came from.
Damian Wayne’s rebirth seems to have given him super strength, in an unanticipated consequence of Batman’s quest to save his son from the cold embrace of death herself. So while fans of Batman and Robin do indeed have their Boy Wonder back safe and sound, he is the new and improved super version, which no one saw coming in an issue which is one for your collection as well as quite entertaining and fun!
