In Review: Star Wars: Bounty Hunters (2020-) #2

Cyborg bounty hunter VALANCE will stop at nothing to find his old mentor, NAKANO LASH

Synopsis: Cyborg bounty hunter VALANCE will stop at nothing to find his old mentor, NAKANO LASH, after her stinging betrayal years earlier. But other bounty hunters have taken the job after a vicious crime lord put out the hit.

The Story

Following a lead. Valance and his droid Nine-Four-El have found the dead body of Jhorsteck the technology wiz that works alongside Nakano Lash. While scanning the area for clues Valance pieces together a chain of events and manages to determine where Lash has run to by learning what Jhorsteck’s dying words were before Boba Fett killed him. The trouble is Bossk and some of the other Bounty Hunters are hot on his trail.

The Artwork

Paolo Villanelli provides some awesome artwork for this issue and most notable are the panels showing us what Valance is seeing when he is scanning the remains of Jhorsteck and replaying camera footage to himself, which appears in a read wash with some gorgeous art showing us Bobo Fett. The artist also gets to draw a really dramatic flashback sequence where we see how Valance first met Nakano Lash and Jhorsteck many years ago. Both these sequences are beautifully drawn and the highlight of this issue.

Overall

Writer Ethan Sacks is thus far giving us a compelling story, which features a likable anti-hero in the form of Valance and some of Star Wars most loved bounty hunters Boba Fett and Bossk. I think this comic will likely most appeal to fans of the Disney + series ‘The Mandalorian’ in that it has the same style of visceral action and brutality. I really liked the flashback sequence in this issue because it gave us a sense of who Valance is and provided some interesting backstory, which reveals that he used to be an Imperial Stormtrooper. An experience, which damn near killed him.

Overall. I’m loving this series and can’t wait to learn more about Valance and his past. The addition of Boba Fett and Bossk is a fantastic bonus for this first story arc and does a great job of enhancing the story without undermining the lead character.
