Synopsis: Two former subjects of Dr. Brenner in Hawkins Lab learn the depths of his sinister ambition after tracking down Subject Eight.
Review: The story continues with a few nice callbacks to season two of the series, which this story is a continuation of.
Jamie and Marci meet Eight, who we got to know as Kali in the second season of ‘Stranger Things’. Kali tells them how she was the person that was used to pacify their sister known as Nine during Dr. Brenner’s experiments. She also reveals that she has briefly met Eleven and gives them a potential lead to one of the Doctors that worked with Nine.
Before Jamie and Marci leave. Kali invites them to join her group who are still tracking and killing the scientist and people that experimented on them.
The team of Ryan Kelly, Le Beau L. Underwood, and Triona Farrell continue to deliver the good as far as the artwork is concerned. The 80s vibe and feel continue to shine through, but it is the flashback stuff where we see brief glimpses of the various experiments that were done on the kids that make for some really interesting imagery.
I also loved the dream sequences where Marci is dreaming and seeing her sister trapped in the castle. I also quite like the fact that Marci and, Jamie’s sister is being referred to as a Princess. The fact that their sister is being looked after by a bear and other cuddly animals in her own world is kind of surreal and something that I’d loved to have seen on the TV show.
Jody Houser continues to entertain and have fun with aspects of ‘Stranger Things’ that wound up being sidelined on the TV show after its second season. I really enjoyed that we got to see Kali again who was a really interesting character from the second season who we didn’t get enough of.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Jody Houser comes up with for issue 3.
