Supernatural, Episode 216 “Angel Heart” Broadcast on April 29, 2015

“Then,” “My name is Jimmy Novak” and he’s shown eating a meal with his family and states God has chosen him, he allows Castiel to take over his body, Claire Novak grows up hating the angel for taking her father away, she arranges to have Castiel killed, Dean ends up killing a room full of thugs because he bears the Mark of Cain, Castiel and Claire make up, the Mark is making Dean worse, and Sam says they’ll find a cure. “I can’t lose you.” “Now,” Jimmy walks in the front door of his house, shouting for his wife Amelia, who’s spooked to see him. “Castiel is gone,” he tells her. They embrace. The happy reunion is broken by blood that appears on her arm and grows. As she begins to cry out, Jimmy grabs the back of her head and asks, “How’s our little girl?” Amelia wakes up from her nightmare. She’s tied to a bed in a shambles of a room. A man is slowly slitting her arms, releasing a vapor which he delightfully inhales. As she panics, he strokes her head, saying, “You’re safe, Amelia. You’re home.” She falls asleep and her dream begins anew with Jimmy walking through the door. Cue opening title sequence.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, Susie’s Bar. Amelia walks in, pumping the bartender for information about Ronnie Cartwright. He’s sitting at a table. She goes over and produces a picture of her mother, telling him she’s missing. He says he doesn’t know her, but Claire counters that he was going to introduce her to some sort of miracle worker. He tells her to piss off and leaves. She follows him outside and he pushes her away too hard, causing her to knock herself out on a dumpster. Angered and scared at what he’s done, he calls 911, then runs off. The next day, Castiel is standing outside the Tulsa Memorial Hospital when the Winchesters pull up. Cas has called them there because “You were both troubled teens. You speak her language.” After the expected exchange of hostilities, Claire reveals that she’s looking for her mom because she ruined her life. She’s in town looking for Cartwright since he was mentioned in the last postcard her mom sent her over two years ago. Her mom was “looking for miracles.” She shoots a look at Cas. “She was looking for you.” The men have a meeting in the hall to make plans and go back into her room to tell them to her, and she’s gone. Sam goes to the hotel on the postcard to find her, while Cas and Dean hit the road to go to Susie’s Bar. At the bar, the pair find Ronnie, motivating him to admit “She was the last one.” He took her to a faith healer, Peter Holloway. The man cured his blindness and had Ronnie work for him recruiting young, lost candidates. Some recruits he healed, others he cut up. After witnessing the latter, Ronnie was done. The pair leave the distraught man, who picks up his cell as soon as he’s alone. At the hotel, Sam greets Claire when she walks in. She’s ready to leave, but he promises to show her how to crack into her mom’s credit cards to get a lead. “Show me, and then I’m gone.” Back outside Susie’s, Ronnie gets a call from Holloway, who appears behind him. “I wanted to give you a heads up.” “Wouldn’t have needed to if you’d kept your mouth shut.” The faith healer taps Ronnie’s forehead, taking his vision, and then puts a large blade through his back. Cue first commercial break.
This episode pushed all the right buttons for me. I had not been thrilled with Claire’s previous appearances, and was not looking forward to her being in this episode. Robbie Thompson’s script completely changed the character, and it’s due to the inclusion of Amelia Novak. By bringing the girl’s missing mother in, the focus falls off of Castiel, as the living form of her father Jimmy Novak. The Castiel-Claire antagonism had been done to death, and by putting mom in threat, the two characters can come together for a common goal. Having each Winchester get a moment with Claire provides a change of view for the troubled eighteen year old, and opportunities for Sam and Dean to show different sides of themselves. Every actor exceled. Jared Padalecki got to act like an older brother to someone whose pain Sam could relate to. Jensen Ackles, thankfully, got to have some fun with Dean, though still weighed down by the Mark, but not drowning in it. The activity that Dean and Claire engage in was a terrific scene with fun dialogue. Misha Collins got to explore Castiel’s grief again, but also show Jimmy and that must have been welcome. Kathry Love Newton was great as Claire, because the script gave her something to do besides be rebellious. Leisha Hailey was good as the mom-in-jeopardy Amelia, and Treva Etienne was a delightful foe, who hints that there may be more of his kind lurking about.
The good: The script, all the actors, the best/worst birthday present–ever, nice oil wells in the motel room, funny movie quote battle, Reason #65 why never to answer a phone call from your brother while hunting, and a great use of a Willy Nelson song (on Wilson’s birthday, no less!).
Fun lines: “Three men and a lady,” “Awesome,” “A little pro tip: Use an alias,” “In this line of work, death isn’t always goodbye,” “That’s not enough?”, “I got it at the Hot Topical,” “How dare you!”, “This is hunting? Homework?” and Dean’s “Happy Birthday.”
The bad: Did this seem like a spin-off? Everything is in put in play for one. I’d like this character to have one more appearance, rather than have it happen.
The final line: This would be an episode to show someone to make them a fan. It was perfect. Overall grade: A
