Synopsis: As the chaos and madness continues to spread, the Avengers and the Defendersfind themselves confronted by the most unlikely characters in Marvel history! Would you believe – THE UNBELIEVABLES?

The Story

Having found themselves in a twisted new reality. The Avengers and The Defenders find themselves changed in both appearance and powers. But complicating matters is the Unbelievables who appear to be superpowered kids cartoon characters who seem to be constantly rebooting and spoiling for a fight. Behind it, all is a set of Tarot Cards that are part of a game that young kids have been playing. The question is. How to get a hold of the cards and undo all the changes that have been made to their reality?

The Artwork

Paul Renaud gets to play around quite a lot with the various characters for this issue making Dr. Strange into Dr. Surf who spends most of the issue sleeping. Captain America is turned in a mixture of Captain America and the Hulk and so on. Renaud gets to draw a lot of frantic action as the fighting is ongoing throughout the issue and very much like a western bar fight where you are not quite sure about who is on what side or what started the fighting in the first place. The best panels come when The Nameless one pops up toward the end of the book, which leads to a series of panels, which sees Gadget Man aka Iron Man having to broker a trade that will ultimately save the day.

Overall

Alan Davis weaves a complex and simple story and ties off most of the loose ends by the end of the issue. Accept we never really get to know what happened to Diablo who mysteriously disappears midway through issue after having been a consistent nuisance. The issue ends very much as the story started with Captain America and Namor in Occupied France during the second world war, but this time everything is normal except for a hint of déjà vu from the Cap.
