Synopsis: This month in ‘The Dreaming’. Bleeding out in a hospital bed from a magic wound that will not heal, sorceress Heather After must swing open the gates of reality to find herself a protector… but is she prepared for the deal she’ll have to strike once she finds a champion with the dangerous power she needs?
The Story
Picking up the story from last month. Heather is in the hospital and fighting for her life after being cursed by Puck. However, she has not given up fighting. In an effort to get help in lifting the curse. She sets about summoning forth another Fae, which is when she meets Matthew the Raven. Having gained Matthew’s confidence. Heather sends him to her apartment to find and pick up her amulet. When he arrives at her apartment. Matthew meets up with Heather’s boyfriend who is accompanied by Ruin. However, things get complicated when a nurse from the hospital turns up.
Meanwhile back at the hospital. Heather has managed to summon the Fairy King Auberon and a deal is made.
The Artwork
The artwork in ‘The Dreaming: Waking Hours’ has been consistently brilliant throughout. Artist Javier Rodriguez continues to hit home runs with every issue. This issue has some wonderful imagery. But perhaps my favorite few pages are the ones where Auberon is telling Heather After the story of how he lost his throne. The drawing for those couple of pages has a very classic fairytale feel to it.
Overall
G. Willow Wilson continues to up the ante in regards to the story. Although I was quite surprised by how quickly Heather After was able to summon Auberon and get her deal with him set. But that said. I get the impression that we are in for some bigger twists as the story progresses. Especially given that Puck is still out there and still capable of causing a great deal of trouble.
Overall. A pretty solid issue that leaves you wanting more.
