In Review: The Flash – The Last Temptation of Barry Allen, Pt. 1

Barry is infected with a nasty virus...

Synopsis: As Barry stands on the threshold of his impending death in Crisis, his convictions are tested when the monstrous Dr. Ramsey Rosso infects The Flash with a mysterious, hallucinogenic contagion.

Review: Aside from a brilliant fight sequence at the start of the episode, this episode runs more like a medical procedural as the team race against time to save Barry Allen.

The Story

When Ralph Dibney aka The Elongated Man gets into a fight with Dr. Ramsey Rosso. He becomes infected by Ramsey’s virus and winds up on the medical table at Star labs. With Ralph fighting for his life, the team is at a loss until Caitlin suggests that a blood transfusion from The Flash may be enough to stabilize him. The Flash phases so that Caitlin can get a needle into Ralph in order to allow the transfusion, but somehow the virus that has infected Ralph transfers to the Flash, who while fighting for his life in Starlabs is hallucinating about Ramsey, who is throwing all manner of temptation his way. The Flash’s only tether to his reality is the Speed Force, which has taken the form of his dead mother.

Elsewhere Harrison “Nash” Wells finds a clue that could be of use in the pending crises.

The Acting

Grant Gustin and Sendhil Ramamurthy put in a fantastic performance in the episode. The scenes where Ramsey is taunting Flash and winding him up about the pending Crises are fantastic to watch as are the scenes between Barry and his mother.

The story of Dr. Ramsey Rossi and his alter ego Bloodwork takes on a whole new element of danger in this episode due to the fact that he now has The Flash under his thrall. The cliffhanger ending was awesome and with only 36 hours until Crisis the clock is ticking for the team to find a way to get The Flash back.

Overall. This episode was a wild emotional ride from start to finish.
