In Review: Vampirella: Roses For The Dead #1

Fan Favorite artist Joe Michael Linsner is joined by writer Kristina Deak-Linsner to create a 4 issue Vampirella mini-series that gets Vampi back-to-basics

Synopsis: Vampirella hunts down a sexual predator in order to feed her insatiable thirst for blood. While tracking him down to a Philadelphia nightclub, Evily the Witch bars her path. They clash and the plan is thwarted. Do they both decide to team up against him, or remain at odds? Whatever the means, Vampi vows to get revenge!

Review: To start this review. I have to admit to having never read any Vampirella. So this was new for me and a most enjoyable story. Prior to reading this. I was only really aware of Vampirella thanks to one of the films that I remember seeing on home video back in the early 90’s.

Written by Kristina Deak-Linsner the story sees Vampi on the hunt for a sexual predator, but she has some competition from Evily a Witch. Linsner does a pretty good job of introducing the characters and the meet up between Vampirella and Evily is done well. As is Evily’s introduction at the very start of the comic.

The artwork by Joseph Michael Linsner is absolutely beautiful. His line work is solid and the panels, which see Evily battling Vampirella are awesome. I really loved what Evily does with her magic and some trash cans and would love to see this done in a film someday.

I loved how Kristina Deak-Linsner manages to have Vampirella quickly recap her origin story while talking to Evily after the fact. This makes this book pretty accessible for newcomers like myself.

Overall. This is a fantastic book with an interesting story and great characters. I think that Vampirella and Evily could wind up being a supernatural version of Cagney and Lacey if they decide to work together.

In short. If you have never read a Vampirella book and are curious. Then this may be a pretty good jumping on point.

Vampirella Roses For The Dead is available now in all good comics stores.
