Neil Cross, who is best known for his brilliant series ‘Luther’ is looking to revive the 70’s cult classic ‘Sapphire And Steel’, which starred David McCallum and Joanna Lumley.
The series, which originally premiered in the 1970’s focused on a pair of inter-dimensional operatives who were tasked with protecting the universe from evil forces that were trying to gain a foothold by disrupting our reality.
The original series ran for a total of 34 episodes, which aired between 1979 and 1982.
Speaking to Nerdist, he announced: “I am planning – it looks very much like I’m going to – relaunch a show called Sapphire and Steel.”
Cross, who has also written episodes of Doctor Who and Spooks, explained: “Sapphire and Steel is a late ‘70s science-fiction horror show, which had an incredibly low budget, so every single episode was a bottle episode where the enemy is time itself … so it would tell ghost stories and monster stories but in every episode somehow time was the villain.”
The New Zealand-based crime writer teased: “There’s a broadcaster in the UK that’s very, very keen to do it.”
In its day ‘Sapphire And Steel’ was massively popular and have several crossover comic books and a regular comic strip in the UK Junior TV Times, which was known as The ‘Look-In’.
In fact Cy Dethan, who is a reguler guest on the SFP-NOW show on scifipulseradio.com once cited ‘Sapphire And Steel’ as a favorite show of his and one that he’d love to adapt to comic book form if the opportunity ever arose. Lets hope he gets that opportunity if Neil Cross is able to relaunch the TV show.
