Spoiler Alert! Marvel’s Civil War storyline from the comic book miniseries is rumored to be kicked off in Cap’s third movie installment.
Robert Downey, Jr. is in final talks to play Tony Stark/Iron Man in ‘Captain America 3,’ which is slated to begin production in the Spring for release on May 6, 2016. Downey, who had hinted at continuing playing Iron Man beyond his third standalone movie, will also suit up for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and ‘Avengers 3.’
The plot is rumored to pit Stark against Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.
Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. In this scenario, Stark is essentially a villain in ‘Captain America 3,’ which assures Downey a significant role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth “Avengers.” The introduction of the Civil War story is part of a plan to drive the plots of sequels and new film franchises for the next seven years.
The Russo Brothers, who directed ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ are in talks to direct ‘Avengers 3’ and possibly ‘Avengers 4.’ Word is these are the directors Kevin Feige wants to succeed Avengers 1 and 2 director Joss Whedon. Whedon has expressed interest in joining ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ as a staff writer, while developing his own, smaller, original projects.
