Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, has now taken over £20 million at the UK & Ireland box office overtaking the total box office records of the first instalments of Iron Man (£17.2m), Thor (£14m) and Captain America (£10.4m)

The intergalactic box office sensation of the summer, Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, has now taken over £20 million at the UK & Ireland box office overtaking the total box office records of the first instalments of Iron Man (£17.2m), Thor (£14m) and Captain America (£10.4m) and smashing the box office totals of Thor: The Dark World (£20.1m) and Captain America: The Winter Solider (£19.3m). The film is set to be the UK’s third biggest film in the Marvel Studios cinematic universe, only behind 2012’s Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and last year’s Iron Man 3.

Filmed at Shepperton Studios in the UK, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is exceeding all box office expectations and has become a global sensation taking over $420million to date in worldwide box office with Germany, Italy, China and Japan still to open. The soundtrack, featuring classic tracks such as Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling and the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back, also topped the US billboard chart and is the second biggest soundtrack of the year, behind Disney’s Frozen – in the UK the soundtrack hit #2 on the iTunes album chart.

Produced by Marvel (the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Avengers Assemble), GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan (Lee Pace), a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), a gun-toting raccoon, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector.

James Gunn directs with Kevin Feige, p.g.a., producing. Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Nik Korda and Stan Lee serve as executive producers.

Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is written by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman and is in cinemas across the UK, in 2D, 3D, 3D IMAX now.
