It’s becoming somewhat of an annual tradition now for NBC to put on a live adaptation of popular stage plays. Last year they chose ‘Peter Pan’, which was pretty savaged by the critics and the year before they did ‘The Sound Of Music’. This year the focus will be on the all black ‘Wizard Of Oz’ play ‘The Wiz’, which was a big movie in the 1970s for iconic performers such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor and many more.
This new take on ‘The Wiz’ features many of the 21st centuries top names who will be easing down the road on 3 December. These names include the fabulous Queen Latifah as the Wiz, Emmy winner Uzo Aduba as Glinda the Good Witch and Mary J Blige as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron’s adaptation of the 1975 Broadway musical is introduced in the new clip, with Shanice Williams taking centre stage as Dorothy.
Following Dorothy on her trip through Oz are the Scarecrow (Elijah Kelley), the Tin Man (Ne-Yo) and the Cowardly Lion (David Alan Grier).
‘The Wiz Live!’ also pays tribute to the musical’s past by casting original Broadway lead Stephanie Mills as Dorothy’s Aunt Em.
As a fan of both ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ and ‘The Wiz’ and pretty much most things related to the classic book series from L. Frank Baum. I can’t wait to check this out when it eventually lands on Amazon Video here in the UK.
‘The Wiz Live!’ will premier on 3 December on NBC. Lets hope it fares better than last years ‘Peter Pan’.
