Review: Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Netflix)

Thank you!

Synopsis: As power-hungry Skeksis drain life from the planet Thra, a group of brave Gelfling unite on a quest to save their world and fight off the darkness.

Review: I first saw Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal in the theater when it came out in 1982. I was 9, and I was slightly traumatized. It wasn’t until I got older that I began to fully appreciate the genius of Jim Henson, Frank Oz, and Brian Froud. Now, The Henson Company has joined forces with Brian Froud once again to continue the saga in live-action with Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix.

I’m not familiar with the world-building done in other media since the original film’s release. As a result, I experienced the expanded world of Thra for the first time along with Deet. I’m truly sorry I can’t list the names of all the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop employees who literally built and rebuilt this world. This review would be 10 pages long if I even tried. Every single one of them is loved by millions of people. Thank you!

What they’ve done and what they gave the superb voice cast to work with is simply breathtaking. I’m glad they kept C.G.I. to a minimum. The sequence in which puppet characters give a lesson in the history of Thra by using puppetry themselves is brilliantly meta and indicative of the skill and craft involved.

As for the writers, they’ve done a masterful job crafting a hopeful prequel. We know that genocide must occur before Thra can be reborn. However, this narrative brings home that life and death are one. The audience isn’t weighed down by how daunting the task is. Instead, viewers soar with new heroes. The writers also feature functional familial relationships — a refreshing change in modern storytelling.

The voice cast does a marvelous job bring the scripts to life. Taron Egerton, Nathalie Emmanuel, Anya Taylor-Joy, Donna Kimball, Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, Helena Bonham Carter, and Lena Headey stand out in an ensemble cast united by love of Thra. Every single actor was ready to play whatever they were given before the scripts were even written. I can’t wait to see what they’re given to play in a second season.

Raissa Devereux became a life-long genre fan at the age of four when she first saw The Wizard of Oz at a screening at Arizona State University. Years later, she graduated from A.S.U. as an English major, History minor, Whovian, and Trekkie. Now a Florida transplant, she loves the opportunity Sci-Fi Pulse has given her to further explore space travel, time travel, masked heroes, gothic castles, and good yarns.
