Yesterday saw several news items break relating to Star Trek: Discovery’s second season, which is scheduled for early 2019 with a few mini-episodes leading up to it in the latter part of 2018. Thanks to We Live Entertainment we are able to bring you the full panel from yesterday.
Guests doing the panel included Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Chieffo, Wilson Cruz, Anson Mount, Mary Wiseman, Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, and Shazad Latif
The second season of the series will see the crew meeting Captain Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and would see Pike needing to take command of the Discovery for a specific mission. This was talked about as well as the storyline that involves Mr. Spock and of course the casting of Number One who is going to be played by Rebecca Romijn.
When discussing the tone of the series. Alex Kurtzman promises that there will be more of a balance this year between the more serious episodes and comedic moments. Kurtzman acknowledged that they didn’t get to do many funny moments last year due to it being a big war story, but added that we’ll get to see some fun moments this year that will be somewhat reminiscent of the comedic moments from Classic Trek.
Also discussed was how they intend to sync up with Canon from the original series. Kurtzman says they intend to sync up with the original series Canon, but at the same time, they want to push up to the edges of it, which means they can do stuff like the Spore Drive and have the question of why Spock never mentioned that he had a human sister. Kurtzman promises that those questions will eventually get answered.
Overall we get a fair bit of information about season two of discovery from this panel, but don’t really get too much about the other new Star Trek shows that CBS is developing.
