SDCC 2019: The Witcher Panel

Henry Cavill lobbied hard for his role on 'The Witcher'

Another series coming to Netflix, which will likely have the interest of video games fans as well as fans of ‘Game Of Thrones’ is ‘The Witcher’, which is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. Gamers will be familiar with the series, but not all of them will be aware that the game came from the book series and the new Netflix series is based on the novels.

Hall H played host to the panel for ‘The Witcher’, which was hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown and featured various stars from the show, which included Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, and Lauren Schmidt.

Henry Cavill, who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Superman in the recent movies said that he was attracted to playing the titular role on ‘The Witcher’ because he saw him as a different type of hero, in that he was a hero that preferred to not be regarded as such. When asked to explain what a Witcher was Cavill described it as a human being that had been trained from a very young boy to have astounding agility and knowledge of alchemy and magic. Cavill also revealed that he had lobbied hard to get the role because he was a huge fan of the video games.

In the series, Cavill plays the leading role of Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher of the series, who winds up becoming the hero of the piece.

Playing the role of Yennefer is Anya Chalotra who is one of the strongest female roles on the show, but also very magical and extremely vulnerable. Yennefer is a character in the show that will likely have one of the most transformative journeys on the show.

The series is a dark fantasy, which has magic, monsters and complex characters, which will likely attract fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ but will also perhaps attract casual viewers as well.
