Following on from reports a few months back about CBS All Access working on several new Star Trek projects, the one that centres on Jean Luc Picard has been confirmed and all indications are that it will not be a time travel story or a prequel as many have speculated.
In a report found at Variety Sir Patrick Stewart, the actor who helped create Jean Luc Picard talked about how pleased he was to be returning. In the quotes released Stewart is quoted and says he is “looking forward to exploring the next chapter of Picard’s life.” This indicates that the series will be set a number of years after the events we all seen in the movie ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’
It’s fair to say that Star Trek in all its incarnations has entertained and inspired many people and this isn’t lost on the Actor who played Jean Luc Picard. The actor touched on this in the following statement about his pending return.
“During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration, and leadership.”
“I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.
“I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”
The new series will not be a reboot or re-imagining of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, but ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman is said to be heavily involved in the production.
“With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trekfold,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.”
The production team behind this new series will also include James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon and Kirsten Beyer. A title for the series is yet to be announced.
At present, it is unknown whether we’ll see any other former Next Generation cast joining the production, but given that Patrick Stewart we can only hope that he’ll somehow use his influence to get a few of his former castmates on board.
