News broke late on Friday that Roberto Orci had chosen to step down as director of the 3rd of the modern ‘Star Trek’ films, which were began by J.J. Abrams back in 2009.
Orci replaced Abrams earlier this year so that the latter could be free to direct the first of the new ‘Star Wars’ movies. ‘Star Trek 3’ was to be Orci’s directorial debut for a big screen feature.
The filmmaker will remain associated with the project strictly as a producer, according to Deadline.
A search has already started for a new director and the lead contender to fill the vacant position if Edgar Wright.
Orci’s own commitment to Star Trek 3 facilitated his decision to drop out as director of the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie.
