Star Wars Rebels will feature the origin story of fan-favorite and original Star Wars trilogy character Wedge Antilles. Interestingly the upcoming Rebels episode will explore Wedge’s beginnings as a cargo pilot, through his recruitment by the Empire and the eventual surfacing of his sympathies for the rebellion.
What is most fun about featuring a back story in Rebels for Wedge Antilles is that the character has obviously played an important role in the Rebellion even though there is really not much known about Antilles based on his appearances in each of the original Star Wars trilogy films. The clearly courageous and accomplished rebellion fighter pilot has flown alongside Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back as well as Return of the Jedi, as played by Denis Lawson, while also witnessing and participating in the destruction of both the first and second death stars.
Interestingly it is also worth noting that the actor who portrayed Wedge Antilles in all three of the original Star Wars trilogy films is also an uncle to another very famous Star Wars actor from the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith respectfully, Ewan McGregor; who played none other than a young Obi Wan Kenobi.
Whether or not Antilles will in fact appear in just one episode of Rebels or go on to become something of a more established and important character in the Disney XD Star Wars animated show is presently unclear. But given the affection that Star Wars fans generally have for the seemingly obscure yet somewhat significant character of Wedge Antilles, it is not hard to see how Antilles could easily become a Rebel series regular and/or reoccurring character at the very least.
The Rebels episode entitled, ‘Welcome to the Rebellion Wedge’ promises to be a fun reintroduction to a very cool classic character who might even have a cameo in the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One as potential cross overs between the television show and movies has in fact been recently hinted at by series producers.
